15th Annual Mike Horgan Hill Climb
Saturday, July 3rd

The Mike Horgan Hillclimb is a road bicycle race that starts in Boulder and climbs to the mountain town of Nederland. The event is open to all cyclists from first timers and beginners to the seasoned professionals, all are welcome. The route uses semi-closed roads and a police escort for a safe, once a year opportunity to ride worry free up Boulder Canyon. The course alternates every year, always up Boulder Canyon but either a right turn on Sugarloaf Rd and ending at Nederland Elementary School, or a left turn on Magnolia and ending near Eldora Ski Resort. This year its on Sugarloaf Rd...

The race starts at the usual spot, 6th St and Canyon Blvd, and heads up Boulder Canyon making a right turn at mile four onto Sugarloaf Rd. On Sugarloaf road you climb, climb, climb all the way up to Peak to Peak Hwy with a few smooth dirt sections of road. A left turn on Peak to Peak Hwy, then a right turn to Sundown Trail Rd. The finish is just ahead at Nederland Elementary.

New racers and Citizens can race in the following fields: Junior field (anyone under under 18); Mens Category 4, 35+ (age 35 and older); Open Women (all women); Mens Category 4 (for men 18-34). For the competitive racers, this year the Mike Horgan Hillclimb is an ACA Best All Around Rider / Team (BAR/BAT) event for Seniors, Masters and Juniors.

Route The race starts at 6th St and Canyon Blvd (Boulder Justice Center) and proceeds up Boulder Canyon making a right on Sugarloaf Rd. After climbing Sugarloaf Rd to the top, make a left heading south on Peak to Peak Hwy (Hwy 119). After two miles, turn right on Sundown Trail Lane. The race will end soon after at Nederland Elementary School.

The Junior race for 10-14 yr olds starts at 9:30am the top of Sugarloaf Rd (Suagrloaf and Peak to Peak Hwy). The course will proceed south on Peak to Peak Hwy (Hwy 119) and turn right on Sundown Trail Lane, ending at Nederland Elementary School.

See more detail of route at Map My Ride
Caution There will be no follow vehicles on course for any category. There will be a rolling enclosure for all categories. If you fall outside the enclosure, you must follow all traffic codes (stay on the shoulder). The course is open to auto traffic.

Afterwards, please carpool vehicles to top, there is LIMITED parking. Or, ride back to Boulder via Boulder Canyon or Sugarloaf Road - Warning - parts of the descent down Sugarloaf are very steep, please be careful.
Mtb or Road bike ? What kind of bike to use ?    The road bike will be faster in Boulder Canyon and at the top of the course on Peak to Peak Hwy. If you are a less serious racer, the Mt bike has more gears for the VERY steep portions of Sugarloaf Rd and will handle better on the dirt portions of Sugarloaf. It's your call.

But remember, if you are using the mtb please remove the bar-ends or turn them so they are not pointing up or forward (ACA Rules).
